Suicide couple forced to marry rapist causes protests

RABAT - Moroccan activists have stepped up pressure to overturn the law that allows rapists to marry their victims after a 16-year-old committed suicide.
Amina Al Filali used rat poison to take his own life after being married for five months with the man who raped her and that since the union permanent, physically abused her.
An online petition and a demonstration scheduled for this Saturday treat the law as "embarrassing" for the country.
The activists want the suspension of Article 475 of the local law that allows rapists to escape from prison if they accept "restore the virtues" of the victim - ie, whether to marry her.Raped at 15, Amina was forced to marry her rapist with the help of a judge. By the law of Morocco, the crime of rape is punishable by 10 years in prison, up to 20 if the victim is a minor.
"Article 475 is embarrassing for the international image of modernity and democracy in Morocco," he told BBC Fouzia Assouli, president of the Moroccan Democratic League for Women's Rights
"In Morocco, the law protects public morality, but not the individual," he added Assouli. She also states that legislation prohibiting all forms of violence against women, including rape within marriage, is to be implemented since 2006.

A BBC reporter in Rabat Fakim Nora says that in parts of the conservative Morocco is unacceptable for a woman to lose her virginity before marriage - and dishonor is hers and her family, even though she is the victim of rape.
Amina came from the small town of Larache, near Tangier, north of the country. The legal age of marriage in Morocco is 18, unless there are "special circumstances" - which is why Amina was married, despite being underage.
Local media said the girl complained to her family about abuse, but was disinherited, which would have triggered the suicide.
Witnesses said her husband was so outraged when Amina took the poison that dragged down the street by her hair - and she died shortly after. Activists are asking the judge allowed the marriage and the rapist will be arrested.
Government study conducted last year realize that about a quarter of Moroccan suffered a sexual attack at least once during their lives.
